The Conservatives romped to victory in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election held on 22nd May. Conservative candidate Edward Timpson (pictured left) gained a massive 17% swing to produce a majority of over 7000 in this traditionally safe Labour seat.
Cllr Ian Gibb, Conservative Parliamentary candidate in Ealing North said, "This is a great result and shows that the Conservatives can win the general election when Gordon Brown eventually calls it. We would win the Ealing North seat on about half the swing the Conservatives got in Crewe and Nantwich.
"I spent a couple of days helping out in the campaign and there was a great atmosphere. There was a genuine revulsion at the campaign Labour ran which concentrated on personal attacks on the Conservative candidate rather than addressing the problems facing people in the country."
David Cameron described the Conservative victory in Crewe and Nantwich as "a remarkable result", and one which marks "the end of New Labour".
He said the result shows that we are building "a real coalition for change in our country - not just including people who used to support the Conservative Party and who are now coming back, but including many people who have never voted Conservative before."
He stressed that while we had fought a positive campaign focusing on the issues that matter to the people of Crewe and Nantwich, Labour's campaign was "relentlessly negative"
